Interactive Tool for Long-Term Planning of Different Energy Assets

06 Apr 2025

In this project we provide an interactive tool allows users to explore the economic and environmental implications of different energy generation technologies up to 2050. Users can adjust key variables like electricity and hydrogen prices, carbon cost, and fixed cost fractions (φ) to assess investment metrics including NPV, ROI, and payback period for each technology. The tool supports interactive recalculations and plot generation to visualize how financial performance changes with varying assumptions.

Notes & Assumptions:

  • **Interactivity:** Parameter cells (light blue background) are editable.
  • **Calculations:** Financial results based on 'Max GW (2050)'.
  • **Global Controls:** Separate Electricity/Hydrogen prices used. Carbon price applies to emissions.
  • **Set All Fixed Cost Frac (φ):** Overrides individual φ values in the table.
  • Investment upfront. Costs/Revenue constant (for Payback/ROI). NPV uses discounting.
  • **Plots:** Select a variable ('Phi', 'Electricity Price', etc.) and click 'Generate Plots'.
    • The plots show NPV and ROI sensitivity as the selected variable changes over its predefined range.
    • **All calculations for the plots use the parameters currently displayed in the interactive table row for that technology** (including Capacity, Costs, Capex, Life, Emissions, Rate, CF, and crucially, **Phi**).
    • When plotting vs. a **Price**, the other global prices are held at their current input values.
    • When plotting vs. **Phi**, the global prices are held at their current input values.
  • Plot Ranges: Phi (0-1), Elec Price (30-300), H2 Price (30-300), Carbon Price (10-180).
  • Units: £m for NPV/Invest/Ann CF. Numeric values 2dp (except Int Life/Capex).
  • Models simplified (esp. Storage/P2G/G2G).
